Eye Care for Diabetics

If you have diabetes, then you know that you’re highly susceptible to a number of diseases and conditions that are directly caused by or exacerbated by diabetes, which your primary care physician might call comorbidities. Hypertension, dyslipidemia, and even arthritis are recognized as potential problems for diabetics. However, most diabetics are not told that their eyes, too, are at a much higher risk of a serious and potentially blinding disease.

Diabetic retinopathy is an ocular manifestation of a systemic disease that affects up to 80% of patients who have been diabetic for 10 years or more. This alarming statistic is indicative of an even more alarming trend in the United States. More people here are becoming obese, which is linked to Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, and these same people are ignoring routine monitoring of their eyes. Although physical inactivity in the United States is the underlying problem, we must address those patients who are currently at risk of permanent and irreversible blindness.

One of the greatest dangers of diabetic retinopathy is that it has no early warning signs. This disease is caused by blood vessels located behind the retina leaking blood and fluid near the sensitive nervous tissue. When leaking occurs, vision often becomes blurry at first. At later stages, patients may experience extremely distorted vision or complete blindness.

There are a number of new treatment options available for diabetic retinopathy. For example. drugs mimicking the body’s natural endostatin called VEGF inhibitors can keep new blood vessels from forming and leaking behind the retina. Even in asymptomatic stages, your ophthalmologist can detect the early stages of diabetic retinopathy with a series of short, simple tests.

If you have diabetes – particularly, if you have had diabetes for 10 or more years – then we urge you to have an annual eye exam. Your eyesight is so crucial to your quality of life, and blindness caused by diabetic retinopathy is generally preventable with proper treatment.

Blade-Free, Laser-Assisted Cataract Surgery Revolutionizes Eye Care – Texas Eye and Laser Center Performs the First Alcon® LenSx® Laser Cataract Surgery in Fort Worth

Fort Worth, Texas – September 15, 2011 – Texas Eye and Laser Center, a well recognized leader in cataract and refractive surgery in the Metroplex, today announced the successful launch of the Alcon® LenSx® femtosecond laser for cataract surgery. LenSx® represents a revolutionary breakthrough in four decades of cataract surgery technology, bringing the precision of the computer-guided femtosecond laser to critical steps of the cataract procedure.

Dr. Jerry Hu, who performed the first series of LenSx® procedures in the Metroplex, stated, “The LenSx® Femtosecond Laser is an important milestone in delivering the benefits of laser refractive cataract surgery to patients, including treatment of astigmatism and the reduced use of ultrasonic power, which means increased safety and less surgical trauma.” As published in The Journal of Refractive Surgery, LenSx® laser cataract surgery resulted in a 43% reduction in average ultrasonic power and a 51% reduction in effective ultrasonic time.

Dr. Brian Ranelle, who has over 34 years of experience in cataract surgery, noted that, “Additional benefits of the LenSx® laser cataract surgery technology include the ability to construct surgical incisions with perfect precision and reproducibility, resulting in more predictable surgical outcome. Combined with the state-of-the-art ReSTOR® multifocal implant, LenSx® offers patients the potential for reduced dependence on glasses.”

Referring to the ability of LenSx® to customize each treatment to the patient’s eye, Dr. Hu observed that, “The LenSx® femtosecond laser has turned cataract surgery, for the first time, from an analogue art to a truly digital science. This extraordinarily exciting technology makes blade-free, customized cataract surgery a reality for today rather than a promise for the future. We at Texas Eye and Laser Center are honored to be the first in the Metroplex to bring our patients the LenSx® Experience.”

Although cataract surgery is the most commonly performed surgery globally, the current manual techniques are subject to inaccuracy and variability. Femtosecond lasers have been utilized extensively for LASIK, with over 3 million procedures performed to date. The LenSx® Laser is the first and only femtosecond laser that has received FDA clearance for use in cataract surgery.

Texas Eye and Laser Center has locations in Fort Worth and Hurst, Texas. For more information, please call 817-540-6060 or visit lasikdr.com/.

Introducing Blade-Free Laser Cataract Surgery

Now, a cataract procedure as unique as your eye itself. The LenSx® laser is an advanced, precision based technology that operates with unmatched precision and computer-control, helping surgeons to customize the procedure to your eye. It is unquestionably the most technologically advanced option for cataract patients.

While all human eyes share the same basic anatomical structure, every eye is just a bit different in terms of size, depth, curvature of the cornea and other key features. Which is why every eye must be carefully measured and mapped prior to cataract surgery. While these measurements have been routinely performed prior to surgery, the LenSx® laser uses a range of highly advanced technologies – including integrated optical coherence tomography (OCT) to capture incredibly precise, high-resolution images of your eyes. These images – and the measurements and data they provide – are then used to plan and perform a surgery to exacting specifications not attainable with traditional surgery.

The incredibly advanced LenSx® laser is designed specifically for performing the most delicate ocular surgery. It uses a laser source to produce femtosecond laser pulses; an aiming system to localize specific targets in the eye; an optical delivery system to precisely deliver laser pulses to desired targets in the eye; and a computer controller to perform clinical procedures.

When you choose the LenSx® laser approach, you will enjoy the benefits of:

A bladeless, advanced procedure

A comfortable, relaxed setting

A truly premium surgical experience
