Cataracts are a common issue among aging Americans.  As we get older, our vision deteriorates and the eye lens can become ‘cloudy’.  In cataract surgery the cloudy lens is removed and a new lens is put in its place.  Traditional lens implants only allow patients to see at one specific distance: near, intermediate, or far.  Traditional implants also require consistent use of glasses after surgery.  With the advances in technology over the years, premium lens implants now provide vision care patients with the option to see at more than one distance at a time.

What are Premium lens implants?

Multifocal Lens Implants

Multifocal IOL lens implants enable patient’s eyes to change focus from far away to up close and are designed to provide quality vision at a range of distances. With a multifocal IOL the main portion of the lens has a series of steps that are carved in a very intricate arrangement with varying heights and lengths between every step. Each step of this diffractive optic bends the incoming light differently; which then creates a near focus that is very distinct from the distance focus formed by the remaining portion of the lens.  The 2 major brand names in this category are:  the AcrySof ReSTOR IOL and the Tecnis.

Accommodating IOL

These special lenses are designed to mimic the eye as the natural lens would. The unique design of the lens enables it to move inside the eye just like the original natural lens allowing patients to improve vision at multiple distances.  This particular type of lens implant has received a compelling amount of positive reviews and testimonials from many of the early patient adopters.  The only accommodating IOL currently available is the Crystalens.

These premium lens options can increase your chances for a life free of dependence on glasses or contacts after cataract surgery.  It is important to keep in mind that vision capabilities are different for every person; therefore we highly suggest consulting with a Texas Eye & Laser medical surgeon to assist in the assessment of which premium lens is right for you to achieve optimal results.
