Cataract Surgery

Cataract surgery is one the most commonly performed and safe medical procedures. The cataract surgeons at Texas Eye & Laser Center have performed thousands of successful cataract implant procedures using the most advanced technology available in their own surgery center. This helps insure a successful result with maximum patient convenience.

Preparing for Your Surgery

It is important that you discuss your vision expectations with your doctor, so that you can determine the right lens implant for you. You will be given the choice of receiving a traditional implant, which correct vision at one distance, or a lifestyle implant (intraocular lens) that corrects multiple distances.  Your surgeon at the Texas Eye and Laser center will discuss the differences between these lenses, but visit out LifeStyle Implants Page for more details.  This intraocular lens will be inserted into your eye after your natural lens has been removed.

During the Cataract Procedure

Before the surgery your eye must be properly cleaned and dilated. A topical anesthetic is used on the top of the eye before the small incision is made. An ultrasonic devise will be inserted into this incision so that it can emulsify the hard yellow proteins that form the cataract, and remove them from the eye.

A folded intraocular lens will be inserted through the original incision. This lens will stay in place inside your eye, providing you with vision after the procedure. You will not be able to feel or sense this lens in any way. Your cataract surgeon will permanently position the lens. Your small incision will self-seal and you will not require any stitches.

After Cataract Surgery

Recovering from cataract surgery is fast and relatively easy! Most patients will notice better vision with their new lens within the first 48 hours.  Please remember that no two eyes heal exactly the same and sometimes vision recovery can vary. It is important that you follow postoperative instructions and use the two different eye medications (both eye drops) as instructed. It is important that you refrain from strenuous physical activity and from rubbing your eyes during the first few weeks after surgery.
