What is LASIK?

LASIK is a permanent laser vision correction procedure that reshapes your cornea to correct refractive errors. These include nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Visual aids like glasses and contact lenses can help improve your vision, but once you remove your glasses or contacts, your vision reverts. With LASIK, your vision correction is permanent because lasers reshape the tissue of your cornea to help light refract and hit your retina correctly.

Am I A Good Candidate For LASIK?

Some factors for candidacy include the following:

  • Your prescription is stable and hasn't changed in a year or more
  • You're at least 18 years old
  • You're not currently pregnant or nursing
  • You have realistic expectations about what the vision correction procedure can achieve
  • Your prescription is within the levels of treatment for refractive errors
  • Your corneas are thick enough
  • You're in good health
  • Your eyes are healthy
  • Your pupils are not larger than normal

LASIK Alternatives

LASIK isn't the only option for vision correction surgery. Some people may not be good candidates for LASIK due to factors such as thin corneas, high refractive errors, or certain eye conditions. For these patients, alternative procedures like SMILE or EVO ICL can offer effective vision correction while addressing the limitations that make LASIK unsuitable.

SMILE

SMILE is a minimally invasive vision correction procedure for patients with nearsightedness and astigmatism. This vision correction procedure uses a femtosecond laser to reshape the cornea and correct refractive errors like nearsightedness or astigmatism. The laser creates a thin disc of tissue called a lenticule within the cornea, which is then removed through a small incision. This process changes the cornea's shape to improve vision, with the small incision healing quickly without the need for stitches.

EVO ICL

The EVO ICL is an implantable collamer lens that helps patients achieve independence from using glasses and contact lenses. Collamer is a biocompatible material that reduces the incidence rate of dry eye. The EVO ICL is an additive lens, meaning that it's implanted into the eye in addition to the natural lens. There is no tissue removed from the eye. The cornea is also not reshaped. Instead, the EVO ICL is placed between the iris and the natural lens to correct nearsightedness and minor astigmatism in patients.
